Route 66

I've been musing lately with the idea of taking a group of students on a summer trip. Some outdoor excursion steeped gently in science. French teachers find themselves traipsing off to France. Geography teachers explore Australia. Hell, even PE teachers take kids on ski trips. Why not me?

But where do we go? I've got some thoughts: Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, canoe trips... I should probably stay stateside for my first foray.

Where, were you my student, would you like to go with me? Fun is important, and the world offers an education that no classroom can match.

*for those who read the first draft, my apologies for the poor editing ;)

one place that holds an interest for me (and that theresa really wants to go) is the bay of fundy in nova scotia, canada. there, you can find extremely large tidal actions - the tidal bore is a popular attraction for rafting during a full moon, and the difference in the sea level can reach 6-8 feet per hour.

i know you wanted to stay in the US, but canada isn't really a country anyway, right?

and if you go, t and i get to be chaperones. zeta.

I grew up near 2 of the most interesting ecosystems - Beulah Bog (a southern relict bog from glaciation) and Horicon Marsh - a stopoff point for a gazillion migratory bird species. These are in Wisconsin, natch.

More nearby, there's the VLA telescopes in New Mexico. Caving in the Ozarks (which I've done and is excellent). Petrified Forest. Go see the giant redwoods/sequoias before they're gone.

(I may have a smidge of scientist in me yet. Maybe I just want to do this stuff.)

grand canyon and yellowstone are both excellent destinations, though with a pile of rowdy, wild, catholic high school girls.....

speaking of the canyon, i'm heading that way in a couple of days on a whitewater rafting trip. keep your fingers crossed that the gnomes and i don't wind up overboard......

route 66 would be really cool as a school trip- wish we'd had that in high school.....

(i'm really into the extra periods today- not sure why.....)

ok- need to blow the dust off my blog and work on a new post.....

(see? more of them!....)

Hmmmm... road trip with Colin? Where would I go? With company as grand as that, any destination would suffice, but I'd have to say Detroit first (to pick up Mary) and then we should go to Disneyland.

I would insist upon experience a road trip qua road trip -- one on which we stop at any point of interest and find non-chain restaurants where we can eat some apple pie homemade by Mable, the quintessential Midwestern diner owner who's been making those pies for decades.

Sounds good to me. :-)

hey- if you went to nova scotia- you could stop and see us ( and camp in our back yard) Also, you pretty much have to pass Niagara Falls to go to Canada from here.

by the way- I miss Colin talk. YOu've been blogless lately and I miss knowing what's new where you guys are. Hugs.!
